About Pedalsure Cycling Insurance

What does your cycling insurance cover?
As standard, all our policies cover theft and damage to the bikes specified in your policy. This includes where your bikes are used or ridden by your family members. In addition, you can add cover for your accessories and personal items, to cover your bikes in competitive races, and to extend your cover overseas. You can also add personal cover to cover yourself in the event of an accident. We have three levels of personal cover: Bronze, Silver and Gold. This cover includes compensation for broken bones and other serious injuries, cover against claims from other people for damage to them or their property caused by your negligence and more.

How much does your cycling insurance cost?
The cost of your cover depends on the value of the bikes you are insuring and the number of optional extras you wish to add, such as personal cover. Cover can start from as little as £3.09 per month for a £500 bike, to £24.04 per month for a £5,000 bike.

We have a more detailed article looking at how much cycling insurance costs.
Who underwrites your cycling insurance?
Our cover is underwritten by Dukes House Insurance Limited, an insurance company registered in Guernsey and authorised and regulated by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission. Registration Number 2522730.

Our legal expenses cover is underwritten by SCOR UK Company Limited. SCOR UK Company Limited is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

Please note that with effect from 30 August 2024, we no longer offer legal expenses cover. All new and renewal policies issued on and after this date will not include legal expenses cover.
What ages do you provide insurance for?
You must be aged 16 or over at the time your policy is purchased.
Am I covered if I bought my bike through a Cycle to Work scheme?
You can purchase cover in the normal way if you bought your bike through a Cycle to Work scheme. Neither your premium nor coverage will be affected.
When will my cycling insurance policy start?
You can choose any day falling within one month of your policy purchase date as the start date of your policy. Be aware that if you choose a future date, your cover will not be effective until the start date you have chosen. This will be set out in your insurance certificate.
What is an excess in cycling insurance?
Just like other types of insurance, the excess in cycling insurance is the amount you - the policyholder - is required to pay in the event of a claim.
How much is the excess with Pedalsure?
Our excess is £75 or 10% of the claim payment value, whichever is the greater.
I live outside of the UK - can Pedalsure cover me?
You must be resident in the UK or Isle of Man to take out a cycling insurance policy with Pedalsure.
I have previously made a claim - will this affect my cycling insurance cover?
Our eligibility requirement for cover is that, in the 12 months prior to purchase, you must not have made more than two bicycle related claims, or a single bicycle related claim for more than £500.
My bike isn't brand new - can I insure it with Pedalsure?
Yes. We replace bikes on a ‘new for old’ basis with a minimum bike value of £400, so as long as the replacement value of your bike is over £400 it can be insured with Pedalsure.
What does ‘new for old’ mean?
New for old’ means that if your bike is stolen and it’s insured for the full replacement value, we will replace it with a brand new model up to the same insured value.
Do you cover cycle couriers and business use of bicycles?
The policies available to buy directly on our website are not designed for business or commercial use but we do offer bespoke policies tailored for business use. If you wish to discuss a commercial quote, please contact our customer service team at cservice@pedalsure.com.
How much should I insure my bike for?
It’s important to insure your bike for its true replacement cost to avoid being underinsured(see below).
For bikes that can be readily replaced with a new one(or similar model) from a retailer, the insured value should be the undiscounted replacement cost(including VAT) from a reputable retailer at the time you purchase your cover. (Note that end of season offers and heavy discounts on ebay do not count as the usual price.)
If your bike is modified, the declared value should include the value of any additional purchased parts such as wheels, groupsets or pedals which are essential to the operation of the bike.
Accessories such as lights, computers and panniers are not essential to the operation of the bike and if cover is required for these they can be included by adding accessories and personal items to your cover and selecting the appropriate limit.
If you built your bike yourself, the insured value should be the total value of the individual parts that make up your bike. You should not include any value for the time you spent building up the bike. It's important that you retain proof of purchase for any after-market parts (as well as for the bike itself) as these will be required to prove ownership in the event of a claim.
What is underinsurance?
Underinsurance is where the declared value of your bike is less than its replacement cost. In other words, the amount you’re insured for is not sufficient to cover the cost of replacing your bike.
In the event of a claim, being underinsured means your settlement amount may be reduced by the amount by which you are underinsured. For example, if the insured value of your bike is only 70 % of its true replacement cost and it gets stolen, your claim payment will be equal to 70 % of the cost of the replacement bike(less the applicable excess).
What is the maximum value bike you insure
We will insure a maximum of 5 bikes (in each case, with an individual value of up to £15,000) up to a total aggregate value of £30,000, unless we have expressly agreed to provide additional cover to you and have reflected this in an endorsement to your Policy Schedule.
Can I insure my collection of bikes on one insurance policy?
Yes, you can insure up to 5 bikes (in each case, with an individual value of up to £15,000) up to a total aggregate value of £30,000.These are also covered against theft and damage for use by the policyholder’s family members.
Am I covered if I lend, loan or hire my insured bicycle to another person?
Unfortunately we are unable to provide bicycle insurance cover whilst the bike is hired or loaned by you to any other person, other than a family member. If you are enquiring about a quote for your bicycle hire business, please get in touch with our customer service team at cservice@pedalsure.com.
Can I insure my family on my policy with Pedalsure?
Yes, we offer family cover as standard. This means that all bikes insured with us will also be covered for theft and damage where they are used or ridden by the named policyholder’s family members. We have a more detailed guide on cycling and third - party liability insurance.
I am only looking for personal liability cover when I am cycling can you help?

Why has my renewal price increased from last year?
We never increase the cost of your cover if we can avoid it.If your premium has increased, it could be because you`ve made changes to your policy and, for example, moved to a new address or increased the level of your cover e.g. by adding accessories cover. Alternatively, it could be because we`ve raised our prices for all customers. We do this rarely but sometimes we need to if, for example, we`ve received an unusually high number of claims over the past year.

Do I need to use a specific type of lock with a Pedalsure insurance policy?
Yes, you do. In order for your cover to be effective you must use an ‘Approved Lock’ when locking your bike. You can find our Approved Locks list here. We use the industry recognised Sold Secure ratings to determine what is an Approved Lock.

I only want bike insurance cover for my 2-week annual cycling trip abroad, can I buy a short term policy?
Unfortunately not. Our policies run for 12-months. We do not offer short term policies. If you take part in an organised triathlon or duathlon then the bike will be covered in transition and you (if added) will also be covered in the swim and run.

Bike types, parts and accessories

Do you cover electric bikes?
Yes, we cover electric bikes. Your electric bike must be road legal for use in the UK as an ‘electrically assisted pedal cycle’ (EAPC). If your e-bike has a maximum power output above 250 watts or its motor provides assistance at speeds above 15.5mph we are unable to cover it. For a full definition of our requirements on electric bikes, please refer to our Policy Document.
Do you cover cargo bikes?
Yes, we cover cargo bikes, including e-cargo bikes. If you have an electric cargo bike, it must be road legal for use in the UK as an ‘electrically assisted pedal cycle’ (EAPC). If your e-cargo bike has a maximum power output above 250 watts or its motor provides assistance at speeds above 15.5mph we are unable to cover it. For a full definition of our requirements on electric bikes, please refer to our Policy Document.
Do I need to prove ownership of all bikes and equipment covered under my policy?
You must upload photos of your bike along with its serial number to your account within 30 days of purchasing a policy with us. In addition, it’s important for bicycle insurance that you have documentary proof of ownership of your bike, any major bike parts and your lock (we will ask for evidence of this if you need to make a claim). Proof of this could be original purchase receipts, packaging, manuals or photos of the relevant parts, clearly showing the make (and model if applicable) of that item. Alternatively, bank or credit card statements can be provided and, on some occasions, retailers may be able to provide copy receipts for larger purchases.
Can I insure a bike that was gifted to me?
Yes, you can insure a bike you received as a gift. We would require proof of purchase of the bike or something in writing from the person who gifted you the bike informing us that the bike was a gift.
I built my bike myself - can I still be covered by Pedalsure?
Yes. When insuring custom built bikes we ask that you insure them for the full retail cost as new, to replace with the same or similar frame and components as you currently have. Unfortunately you cannot include the time it would take to build up your bike again. In the event of a claim you do need to provide us with proof of ownership for your bike and lock, so if your bike does consist of various components we would require receipts, packaging, instruction manuals, or photographs for your bike and the components, in order to be able to replace with the same or similar.
What does your accessories option cover?
We offer cover for up to £1,000 worth of accessories and personal items.Accessories are equipment added and fixed to the frame of your bike and which are not essential to the bike’s operation. This includes panniers, GPS computers, saddle bags, mudguards, lights, trailers and passenger carrying trailers.Personal items are items of clothing and articles of a strictly personal nature including cycling helmets, cycling clothing and sports equipment.Items which are essential to the bike’s operation such as upgraded wheels or gears should be included in the declared replacement value of your bike.
I have a racing bike with several sets of racing wheels which I also need to insure. Should I include the cost of them in my bike value?
Our insurance would cover the cost of any wheels fitted to the bike at the time it is damaged or stolen. We would suggest including the value of the most expensive set of wheels in the replacement value of the bike that you declare to us when you take out the policy.
Please note that in the event of a claim, you will need to provide proof of ownership of the items that you are claiming for.Ideally this means the receipt, but can include packaging or photos of the items attached to the bicycle.
I have recently purchased a child trailer costing £500 - does Pedalsure bike insurance cover such items?
A bike trailer would be deemed as an accessory under our cover. You must add the accessories and personal items option to your cover for the required amount to cover your trailer. You cannot insure the trailer as a separate item.

Claims

How do I make a claim?
To make a claim (other than for legal expenses), login to your dashboard and visit the Claims area to make a claim. You will then be prompted to fill in and submit a claim form online or call one of our partners if your claim is for personal injury or loss of earnings. To make a claim for legal expenses, please use ARAG. Download a claim form from www.arag.co.uk/newclaims and follow the steps provided.
How long does a cycling insurance claim take?
We deal with all claims in-house and we guarantee to assess your claim within 24 hours. That means that one of our team will review your claim within that time. Your claim will be approved within a short time of assessment. This can be the same day, within 48 hours, or slightly longer if your claim is more complex and we need additional documentation, for example. We often settle claims on the same day they are approved.
Will you repair my bike or replace it if it’s damaged?
It's important to note that each case depends on the nature of the damage to your bike and the replacement value you’ve given for your bike (you should always insure your bike for its full replacement value). If you're covered with Pedalsure and get in touch to tell us your bike has been damaged, after completing the claims form, the first step will be for us to get our bicycle repair specialists to assess the damage to your bike. If it can be repaired (at a value up to the amount shown on your policy) we'll get it repaired for you or, of if you prefer, we'll pay you for the repair amount in cash. If it can't be repaired, we'll look to replace your bike for you and if we can't replace it, we'll pay for the loss or damage in cash.
Will my premium go up if I make a claim?
We do not penalise you by increasing your premium if you make a claim, provided the replacement value of any new bike covered by the policy remains the same as your previously covered bike.
